Scroll on and be inspired!.

It's just a lesson just to go over the. Real basic techniques of carving using. The basic tools i just sketched on this. Flower and we've got some overlapping. Petals here and this is going to be a. Relief carving so i'm going to lower. Down the background so just going to. Start out by simply taking a veatch. Issel and going around the outside now i. Use this technique quite often going. Around the outside and actually leaving. That line okay and leaving that line the. Reason i'm using a v chisel first is.

Because i'm actually removing a bulk of. The wood so that when i start defining. This edge it's going to save little. Fragile corners now obviously there's. Not a lot of fragile corners on this one. And in fact it's not even symmetrical i. Was drawing it i thought oh well it's. Just a practice piece right okay so when. I go around all of the edges this part. Of my hand right here is always touching. Something even if i'm going off the edge. Here it's going to be touching either a. Clamp or the bench dog here or the bench. Itself or something and that is where. The control comes okay and i twist it. Around there i actually have quite a. Hard little callus there because of that. One thing to keep in mind as you're when. You're first starting to carve it's very. Important to get comfortable using the. Hand that you're not comfortable with my. Right hand here is my natural leading. Hand all right that's the most. Comfortable but what i would encourage. You to do is turn the tool around and. Use that same position of your hands and. Using this make sure this part of your. Hand is always touching something and. Really try to get comfortable you. Using whatever hand you're not. Comfortable with because you're really. Learning how to use tools anyway and so. While you're in the in that process of. Learning how a tool feels in your hand. Just put it into that hand as doesn't. Doesn't naturally feel comfortable with. And get used to it right from the very. Beginning.

Okay i'm keeping my v chisel straight up. And down i'm not sort of leaning it one. Side or the other just so that the each. Of the v sections are even so that. You're not leaning at one side of there. Okay so that's basically the first step. That you want to do now if you want to. You can take a mallet and just very. Lightly go around and do those same cuts. Just by by very lightly tapping so. Instead of pushing like i showed you you. Can take and go around and do those same. Cuts by pushing or tapping with a mallet. And a lot of times i use that technique. If i really want to get good control. Because if when you think about it. You're coming along here and i can. Really i can start tapping a little bit. Lighter a little bit lighter a little. Bit lighter and i can control where. That's going to stop well when i'm. Pushing through sometimes there's not. That much control next thing i want to. Do is i want to find a curved gouge that. Fits as close to the outside curve as. Possible as close to the line that's. Drawn as possible alright and i'm going. To use a mallet on this and i'm going to. Define this now this now is why i use. That veatch i go first because if i just. Came in there and just made this cut. Without making that v cut first there's. A real potential of the carving itself. To be damaged okay and i'm going around. The curve like this i'm lining it up i. Made that one cut and then i'm taking. The chisel and i'm lining it up in that. Cut i just made so it's a continuous. Line and it's kind of funny actually i'm. Looking at this the my chisel actually. Is correcting the wiggly lines that i. Drew my chisel nose more than my pencil. That happens quite often actually okay. So you just want to keep a consistent. Consistent depth and a nice even line. All right this is actually defining the. Edge of the design itself i like you. Just as straight up and down as possible. This line. This cup that i'm making straight up and. Down and you notice right here i've. Actually still have my hand right here. Now against that so i can guide it if. I'm sort of without with no really. Control it's hard to line that up very. Nicely so i want to brace my hand and. Then line it up. Okay now i was fortunate enough to be. Able to use the one gouge all the way. Along and even though my my design is. Uneven next thing i want to do is i want. To just just four quick so i can get. Into the design part of it i'm just. Going to take the sand ouch this is. Number seven and i'm just going to come. Around and just lower the background. Down so that it appears that this flower. That i'm going to be carving is raised. Off the background you can lower the. Whole background down if you want and i. Will be going through that technique on. Another project but this is really just. Sort of to quickly get us into the. Position of shaping the flower itself. Okay so there's going to be some areas. Like right here along here for just. Don't quite i didn't make that cut quite. Deep enough so you might have to go back. And just define that a little bit more. But the the goal right now is to have a. Nice vertical edge and a clean corner so. What i'm doing and making a cut and i'm. Really pressing pressing down very hard. And making sure that that goes nice and. Deep and defined really solid okay okay. So when i start detailing the inside i'm. Going to go back with the v chisel and. Again i'm let's go since this is a. Really tight curve i'm going to go. Around with the mallet leaving that. Center part of the flower and i remember. What that's called. Anyway the center part of the flower. That c in the center now what i want to. Do is just because i don't want to do. Any of the details yet i'm going to make. The flower itself just have a general. Flowing flowing down on the outside and. Then flowing into that center take the. Number 314 millimeter and a lot of times. I use these gouges i use it the the. Gouge itself with the bevel side down as. If it was a flat chisel really okay now. See in this whole area here i switch. Back and forth from my right to hit. Right to left hand quite a few times. Excuse me in this whole process okay now. What i'm doing here and making sure i'm. Going in the right grain direction now i. Would suggest before you do this process. You look at the lesson on carving the. Doughnut because this is basically what. We're doing we're carving the doughnut. From here go on that direction around. From here and go in that direction. And from here let's physically the. Center it could go either way come. Around and they're going this direction. Alright and then from here and go in. This direction okay so i'm just getting. A general rounding over of the outside.

Okay so if you notice i turn the tool. Bevel side down and cut it all the way. Alright if i turn the tool upside down i. Mean you would think that well it's. Curved so i might as well use the. Curvature of the tool but it really. Doesn't allow me to that my hand right. Here actually started gets jammed and i. Can't really grab on to it okay. So i can probably do it along the edge. But as it goes as it comes up to the. Surface there it really forces the tool. Flat against there and then there's a. Real possibility of this side of the. Tool digging in to this part of the. Flower so a lot of times i sort of go. Back and forth as i'm carving taking one. Tool in my hand and turning it so. Rounding it over and i can do the same. Step with a flat chisel and just take a. Regular even reddit regular bench chisel. And do this okay so it's round it over. What i'm doing is just simply now this. Is what you really have to have control. Simply using whatever curved gouge works. The best with whatever the shape is as. I'm coming here you want to really be. Careful not to let that hit too hard and. Then we're going to lose that center if. You watch this you see what i'm doing. I'm making a slicing motion very very. Subtle but instead of just pushing. Through i use this cut quite often just. Very very light slicing. And what that does also it really helps. To prevent it from going too far you. Know if you're just pushing through i. Don't have a lot of control over it so. Almost every cut that i make has got a. Real slight slicing motion now i'm going. To define the edge of this i could have. Done this before but before i made that. Cut around it but only now watch what. I'm doing this this gouge is actually a. Little bit too large this is a number. 712 the curve is just a little bit large. So what i'm doing watch watch this i'm. Actually taking it an angling tool and. Just using it using a section of the. Gouge. Okay and that's really when i first. Started carving that was i only had a. Limited number of tools so i pretty much. Learned how to make the tools do all. Sorts of things make them more curved. And what they really are and this is how. I managed to carve for a couple years. With only about five or six gouges. Didn't have all the specialties spooning. Bent low me or anything like that all. Right now i'm going to just going to. Redraw this next time i take my v--. Chozo. And go around all these this is where. I'm going to do some overlapping so this. Is a continuous line from here and then. It continues on around there that's the. Edge of this petal so this is going to. Flow down and tuck under okay so that's. Usually a good way of indicating whether. Something goes over or under we can. Actually define the edge so all of these. This is actually going around spiral so. It's quite simple but again i'm leaving. The line okay you can either use a. Mallet or push through now if i push. Through be careful as i'm coming down. Here very very careful not to go too far. Into that alright this one coming around. There and again i'm just defining this. Edge here as its curving around. Therefore this pedal is going underneath. Okay so we've defined that with the v. Chisel now what i can do is come here. And you might want to just sort of for. Safety so you don't carve down the wrong. Side is actually mark down the areas. That are going under petals that are. Going to go underneath the other ones. Just to kind of keep it straight because. There's lots all sorts of lines. Happening here and it could get pretty. Frustrating and confusing i'm going. Right down to the depths of that v cut. That i made and i'm going to come here. And let's define that edge okay now this. Is where you could take either step. First so i can come down there like that. Or i can come and define this first and. Then come and carve that down now this. Is where you're really going to have to. Keep an eye on the grain these two they. Allowed me to pretty much go right. Across and carve that down i'm going to. Just come in here and very very lightly. Blend it so it's not very obvious or now. I'm not a real edge there okay come over. Here. Okay then just continue going around. Yeah i like doing the definition cuts. First come back in now notice i'm always. Having this hand down against something. Okay now this one is a little tricky if. I continued along that one what i was. Going to do this could potentially break. Off so i need to come in from this. Direction. Now that's basically it just a general. Shaping over i don't like to see any of. The original original wood surface so. I'd like to go over edges and just sort. Of round them over and make sure that. None of the original soft surface or a. Plain surface shows just because it does. Show and makes it very obvious when. There's that transition between carved. And flat so i do go over all of this. Give a little bit of shape all right now. This center part here just going to. Quickly go over this one now the grain. Is going in this direction so i can come. From here and round over like that and. From there and over like that okay and. This is the number seven twelve. Millimeter and this is the technique.

That is used to make grapes or beads or. Anything like that so it's a starting. Here and then it's just twisting or. Turning the tool up and lifting it up. Higher i'm just going to do a couple. Little accent lines this is a my v. Chisel and just make one or two little. Ones so the various lengths and what. This is really doing is just creating a. Little bit of a wrinkle make two in this. One just to add a little bit of rot. Variety all right so that's basically. What we're looking for all right. And very very simple project a good one. To start out with probably after you do. The doughnut because you're dealing with. A lot of grain things here a lot of. Grain issues i still don't want to leave. There's some areas here that are still. Very flat the original flat surface but. That's basically the idea of layering. And. Doing the overlapping and working with. The the grain issues.
